Courses taken to fulfill MLO:
-Span301 Comp/Oral Practice
-Span 303 Advanced Spanish Grammar
-Span 305 Spanish for the Professions
-WLC 400 Major Capstone
Reflection:
The courses listed above helped me to fulfil my MLO 1. Span 303 helped me to write and speak grammatically correct in Spanish, in specific to know where the accents go and the use of the subjunctive. During the course, we looked at examples of students who confuse estar and ser and por and para. The class activities and homework helped me to further understand and identify these mistakes.
In Span 305 I learned the spanish used in the workplace. During this course, I learned how to fill out a job applications, how to do a job interview and how to communicate properly in the workplace. In the class I had to write a script about a product that we would like to sell, this helped me to properly use the adequate vocabulary to persuade the customer to buy my product.
These courses helped me to prepare myself to put together a capstone project to demonstrate my fluency in Spanish. WLC 400 is a class where I need to demonstrate my progress and abilities as a Spanish major.

Courses taken to fulfill MLO:
-Span 313 Intro to Spanish Linguistics
-Span 383 Basic Bilingual Negotiation
Reflection:
In Span 313, I learned about the different types of Spanish spoken in different countries, as well as dialects in different regions. Moreover, we focused on the morphology, phonetics, syntax of the language. To get a better understanding of the course, we were assigned to work in pairs to choose a Spanish speaking place and research the way people talk and the variations of words. Furthermore, we also focused on the phonology in the way other people speak it. For example, in Spain they use the /s/ a lot, meanwhile in Puerto Rico, the speakers omit the /r/ sound. This course was very interesting for me because I’ve would always wonder why some people pronounce Spanish differently.
I took Span 383 while I was studying abroad. I really liked this class because it was more about hands on than just lecture. In this class I learned and practiced translation through real life events. Furthermore, this course taught me how to an effective translator by taking notes, not using letters but symbols, to then translate to the other person either in English or Spanish. Also, we were required to learn vocabulary related to business because this class focused on negotiation.

Students develop a reasonable understanding of the ways of thinking (ideas, beliefs, attitudes, values, philosophies), the behavioral practices (patterns of social interactions), and the cultural products – both tangible and intangible (for example, art, history, literature, music) — of Hispanic societies.
Courses taken to fulfill MLO:
-Span 322 Masterpieces Latinamer Lit
-Span 304 Intro to Hispanic Literature
-Span 371 Women and Literature (XLX-XX Century)
Reflection:
In Span 322 class, Dr. Urioste taught us various pieces of literature that were based on history. I really liked reading from Latino authors because through the poems and short narratives I learned and understand Mexico’s history. In this course, we didn’t really had assignments other than to read at home and be prepare the following class day to participate in class.
In Span 304, Dr. Zielina help us to analyze a poem and break it down into parts. Also, we learned about the Spanish literature as well as Latin-American literature. In this course, we were assigned to read poems, short narratives and essays and later share our reflection in class. What I enjoyed the most from this course is that Dr. Zielina had us pick any of our favorite poems and then break them apart and analyze the poems. This was helpful for me because she was very open to what students wanted to do if they can practice what she taught.
In Span 371, I learned about the important role that women plays in literature. I took this class while I was studying in Spain. Dr. Parra had us read narratives and analyze them through a female lens. I learned that men thought that women were not able to think clearly because their brain was smaller, therefore women were to stay at home and be the “angel del hogar”. Furthermore, through the readings I could see the female’s empowerment and how they used writing as a way of healing.

Courses taken to fulfill MLO:
-HCOM 346 African American Life/ History
Reflection:
In HCOM 346 I could learn about African American History and their lifestyle. This class was very interesting because I learned things that are not taught in middle or high school. Not teaching about lynching and discrimination, made me wonder if the U.S doesn’t want us to learn about their horrific practices because they are ashamed of their acts. Moreover, I could learn about the African American practices, like rituals and spiritual activities to resist against the U.S oppression. In this class, the professor assigned different activities that enhance our learning experiences by not sticking to the curriculum, but stepping out of the echo chamber and investigate social issues and how African Americans resist.

Students demonstrate that they have actively immersed themselves in authentic Hispanic cultural and linguistic environments and have internalized the language and cultural experience, from which they have developed personal understanding and new perspectives of Hispanic communities.
Note: Students develop intercultural communication skills and strategies, and learn to adapt and respond in effective ways. This MLO may be fulfilled by a study abroad experience or equivalent. Courses taken in a study abroad program may count toward another MLO. Students who choose Pathway 2 will be working on a community project to fulfill this requirement.
Courses taken to fulfill MLO:
-Study Abroad
Reflection:
MLO 5 was fulfilled by studying abroad to Sellive, Spain, Universidad Pablo Olavide, for one semester. While I was abroad, I took 12 units, all the classes were in Spanish and I could experience the culture, language and the linguistic environment. I could communicate fluently with my professors and classmates. It was hard at times to communicate with them in the sense that they use different words to describe something, but by communicating and explaining the meaning of the word we could understand each other. I was also able to experience their traditions and their lifestyle, they have siestas and their meal times are different. What I liked the most about studying abroad is that I could learn things from their perspective. It was interesting how I noticed a difference in teaching styles between CSUMB professors and UPO professors.
